[aisle] Student Book Subscription

With our personalized book list service – which we’ve been doing for quite a few years now (I’m in a public library), the questions I find most helpful are the ones where I ask kids what books they’ve liked that they read recently and what books they have NOT liked. I find those questions most helpful because it gives me an idea of what level books are appropriate and also an idea of the themes/pacing, etc. that appeal to them. Also, they often don’t share a book they didn’t like, but when they do, it’s very helpful. If it’s a sad book, I know they probably don’t like things that are too sad/serious. If it’s a plot-driven story, I know they probably tend to gravitate to deeper, more reflective/character driven stories. Sometimes, the books they like and don’t like are very different reading levels, and that tells me they might be intimidated by more advanced books.

That said, sometimes kids don’t name any book for either question, and when that happens, it’s good to have some other questions, like a “pick two genres you’d like to try” question or a question about whether they want shorter or longer books.

Here’s our questionnaire. https://www.scpld.org/book-list-just-you Feel free to email me off list if you have any questions – while my job title is preschool focused, I’ve worked a ton of these personalized lists for kids up through 8th grade ever since we launched the service years ago, and I have a lot of opinions. ☺

Subject: [aisle] Student Book Subscription

Hi all,

I am trying to drum up "business" from my remote students. I want to create a Checkout Subscription box. They would fill out a questionnaire with some RA questions then I'd choose 3 books, check them out to the student, and have them pick up the box with books and a few special surprises inside (eraser, bookmark, etc.)

I am wondering if anyone has done this yet...pitfalls?
Does anyone have any input on the questions you think might be helpful for the RA questionnaire?
