Four years ago we started a Battle of the Books using the Bluestem list. We had a school battle and then a semi district one with 6 schools out of twelve competing. The next year we expanded to all 12 elementary schools in our district.
We divide the list of books into 5 groups of 4 books, giving each group a blending of book titles based on genre, chapter versus picture book format, and reading level.
Both 4th and 5th grade compete and I let the kids make up their teams although I help when

Hello!
I have been asked to offer suggestions on how to "revitalize" a Battle of the Books program in our 4th-5th grade building. For those who organize Battle programs in your schools, how do you maintain momentum and keep students motivated to read the books throughout the year? How do you form teams? What books do you use for the battle titles? Do any of you use the Bluestem list?

Thanks so much for any suggestions. I have a meeting with a principal this week about this topic.
