[aisle] School Library Reopening... or Not

Dear Colleagues,

I do not believe anyone has yet shared the New York City Public Schools “Translation of Practice” document. I’ve attached it here with kudos to Melissa Jacobs, Director of Library Services, for her leadership.

This is what I especially appreciate about it. As you compare the two columns on this document, you will note there is very little difference between the roles and responsibilities of school librarians when teaching and learning are face to face and when teaching and learning are conducted remotely.

Last Monday, I posted “School Librarianship in Time of Coronavirus, Part 2.” In the post, I suggest indicators of high-quality, equitable library services based on five roles of effective school librarians: leader, instructional partner, teacher, information specialist, and program administrator. These indicators can be applied for self-assessment whether working from the physical space of the school library or the virtual space of an online academic program. https://tinyurl.com/sllblog061520

The previous week’s post focused on the work of two teacher librarians during the pandemic: Shannon McClintock Miller, Van Meter Community Schools, Iowa, and Traci Chun, Vancouver Public Schools, Washington State as shared in a 6/5/20 Future Ready Librarians® webinar. These two bright spots of practice, communication, and collaboration reinforce this idea—our online/remote roles and responsibilities are not drastically different: https://tinyurl.com/sllblog060820

Perhaps these resources can help us consider how we will work in 2020-2021 whether we are serving students and colleagues in the physical space of the library or remotely online.

Stay safe and well.

Best,
Judi
