[aisle] New Kid

New Kid is one of the best books I read last year. I could not put it down and have been sharing it with students (and friends) since last May.

It was awarded the Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American children’s literature. It does not have ideas of race throughout, it speaks to microaggressions that persons of color experience on a daily basis. There is much to be learned, much to gained from reading and sharing New Kid.

I have it in my K-5 library and do not restrict anyone from checking it out. If you have other middle grade novels in your collection, I would consider adding New Kid.

I think it is fine for 4th grade, for sure. I do not see anything that is inappropriate.

Thanks, all! And in my rush I put 8:00-12:00 instead of ages 8-12. Shows you we are multitasking and not so good at it sometimes!! I appreciate your feedback. I think I'll ignore the reviews and send it up to middle school since we only go up to 4th.

Oh gosh, I don't know. It may be ok. I don't plan on getting it, but let me know what you think after you read it.

Hi All..I ordered a copy of New Kid by Jerry Craft for our K-4 building....the reviews said 8:00-12:00 and grades 4-7. Does anyone else have it in their elementary building? It is fairy intense with the ideas of race weaved throughout. Do you feel it is appropriate to have in a K-4 building?
