I have an Ultimaker 2+ 3D printer in my high school library. It gets sporadic use by students, mostly in marketing classes who need prototypes and physics classes that design mouse trap cars. Students can also create their own designs. All prints that are for class are free, and I usually give at least one personal design for free (more if they are not too large). For larger personal projects, I just charge the cost of the filament by weight. Students have to submit a form to me for approval, and they share their design with me. Even though the form says to convert the print to the printer format, I usually do that step myself. That way I can fix prints that have problems. Some advanced students are pretty good at design, so they can do that step.

Good morning everyone,

I'm trying to work out a set of policies for use of the 3D printer at our school. Do you have formal policies for how to submit files and requests for printing? How do you actually use 3D printers in your library? Would you be willing to share some best practices for getting started with MakerSpaces?

Thanks.
