[aisle] New Kid

I have it in my K-5 library and it circulates (and has circulated) regularly. This is a terrific book, and has circulated nonstop to my 5th graders, particularly - to students who are every color. Yes, it asks challenging questions, but it is also a story of belonging and change, which lots of students enjoy. Just because they are younger doesn't mean they don't encounter and see race issues - we see it even in our younger grades among students.

The things that make it a great book are going to go over elementary kids' heads. It's fabulous for middle school, but you would be better off spending your funds on something more elementary appealing.

Does anyone else have it in their elementary building? It is fairy intense with the ideas of race weaved throughout. Do you feel it is appropriate to have in a K-4 building?
