[aisle] [External] 2021 Caudills

I have purchased all but Long way down. The Only Road was a slow read but a good one. I have Refugee in my library from this year’s list. I think Refugee was more graphic than The Only Road.

I have been on the fence about Drum Roll, Please. So funny, I went right over the Santa Claus section. LOL. You have to think that by the time kids are in 4th grade they have heard from friends that Santa is not real. Let them make up their mind, after all, it is a fiction book. ;)

I was nervous about the relationship in the story. In our elementary library we don’t have very many books that deal with romantic storylines, but I keep reminding myself that it is also about divorce and finding your voice. I also had a serious conversation with myself that if the storyline involved the same topics, but her having a crush on a boy, I wouldn’t have an issue with it. I think that sealed it for me. It will be on my shelves next year.

I've recommended Drum Roll, Please to some high schoolers, and even for them, it was an important book since it depicted a (somewhat) positive coming out experience for a 13-year-old. I think a story about coming out at age 13 should be for ages 11 and up (younger if they express an interest in LGBT stories/coming out stories). I realize Caudill is grades 4-8, but like you mentioned, Stephanie, some things that an 8th grader is going to read is going to be different than a 4th.

Drum Roll, Please has been a very important read to some of my middle school girls. Let’s not prevent such books from being on the list because of Santa Claus. Maybe kids in 3-5 should consider reading Bluestems instead. I am our middle school librarian and read all of the Caudills each spring and make recommendations to the elementary purchaser on titles that are more elementary versus those that are more solidly middle school.

I was a little shocked when I got to page 4 of Drum Roll, Please when the author mentions the truth about Santa Claus. My daughter will be in 4th grade next year and still believes along with many other students in her class. As a parent, I would be very disappointed if my child had to learn about Santa from a book.
