[aisle] Magazines for a small, rural high school

I just got in contact with Ebsco to give me a price on digital magazines. We stopped the magazines last year also because nobody was looking at them. I am hoping there will be more interest online and I can use them if I need to do a lesson on text features or main idea, etc.

I agree with Amy's question: what is the purpose of the collection? I'm in a small, rural high school and we were eventually not getting much readership of magazines. Students indicated that they wanted things they could read on their Chromebooks or phones. So we rolled that money into new books. We don't subscribe to any phsical magazines anymore. But I do make sure to highlight how students can read issues of Sports Illustrated and other popular magazines in our EBSCO subscription.

My question to you would be, what do you see as the purpose of your magazine collection? I don't get much usage from mine, but I do get some browsers looking through Game Informer, things like Entertainment Weekly/People, or Rolling Stone. I do have one teacher who gives extra credit for reading in a French language magazine, so we make sure always to renew that.

Hello all!
I need some advice on the selection of magazines for a small, rural high school with an extremely small periodical budget.

  * What methods have you found most effective to determine what you should subscribe to?
  * Are e-magazines a better choice these days?
  * What's the best way to display hardcopies?
  * What's the best way to promote an e-magazine selection?
I started here last February and have only seen one or two people browse the magazine stand. Many of our subscriptions are up for renewal and I would really love to see the library do a more effective job of using its periodical money.
Open to new ideas,
Jill
