Speaking of, has anyone made a bookmark for Read For a Lifetime yet this year? I can't find the file from last year that someone so graciously shared with me.

If you have last year's that works too- I can update it. I just like the checklist format, and I figure I can at least post it on the library's site for kids who want to print it at home.

Thanks!

Jennifer,

I just got off the phone with the state library. The program is still running. They are sending me an email with information about the program that I will send out once I get it. (The IT person retired as well, so that's why the website is wrong.) If someone is wanting to sign up before that, they can call 800-665-5576 ext. 2 to talk to someone who can help.

Thank you. Jeanne Urbanek from the Illinois State Library sent me the list before she retired in the spring. I noticed that the state web site is still not updated as I had wanted to link the official list to our school web site. I have tried to attach it here, but I am not sure the status of the position or the program. We also do the Lincoln program, but our district has always been active with Read for a Lifetime and use that for our statistics so we focus on that first.

Hi Jennifer,
Nice site! I loved your video of the new Read for a Lifetime books. Where did you get the new list? I think I missed a memo, because I haven't seen it anywhere.

Hi,
I've seen this thread going and thought I would share. I just updated my LRC website<https://sites.google.com/phs-il.org/phs-lrc/home?authuser=0> from the old Google Sites to the new. It's actually very easy to work with. Anyway, I'm at Princeton High School so I am showing you a HS-focused site. I hope to keep building on my reader advisory but this is a start. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Amy,
It is very evident to the viewer and potential users that you indeed took a lot of time to develop your web site. Even though
I am a high school media specialist, I had to look at every tab to see what was there. I also liked the easy bar links to the
guides etc that you have developed. Kudos to you for a great display of your libraries resources and programs.

Our principal has asked all of his staff to revamp their web pages as we have been guilty of being stagnant. I think I
am going to borrow some of your wonderful ideas to see if I can bring a freshness to my page.

Hi Carla,
I thought the same thing! Now more than ever I wanted our website to be effective. I just published the first phase of my new site, it took me about 2 days to get it completed. Its nothing fancy, but my goal was a simple, effective, scalable, and user-friendly site. Our school is about 75% in person, so my first goal was to get a solid foundation in place for the new site, and then to reach out to the in person and remote teachers to see what they think and what I can add/modify to support them all. https://sites.google.com/itasca10.org/franzenlibrary/home

These were my main takeaways from the process, in case you're interested:

- Leaving the school's content management system - Our CMS was not supportive of the type of site I wanted to create, it needed to be user friendly enough for me to make changes often in order to keep it up to date. It also needed to support a modern look and feel and use responsive design. I moved to Google Sites and am happy with the decision.
- Starting with a strong site map/menu structure as the basis - I took the existing links and information on our site and the new information I wanted to add and basically created an outline/sitemap in a google doc. This helped make it clear what the main menu items should be before actually starting to build the site. I tried to highlight the core functions of my library (at this point in time) as the main menu items, while keeping in mind the need for growth and change. I tried not to get too hung up on this though, in the end, if I do need to modify, it won't be hard since its in Google Sites now.
- Steal from others! - As always, the librarian community has so much information. I looked at other school library websites and used them for inspiration to build something that would work specifically for my community. (Shout out to the original creator of the Bluestem bookshelf idea, I added a Thinglink version to my website, kids saw it today and said, 'That is so cool!', so thanks!!!)
- Simplicity of content - I tried to use images, buttons, and links effectively and to be as concise as possible with blocks of text. My goal was for users to find what they need with a quick glance, I knew that too much information would make the site just as bad as not enough information.

It was super satisfying to get the new site up, I'm going to start introducing it to kids and staff in the next couple of weeks, so that will be the real test!

Good luck!
-Amy
