[aisle] remote learning book check out proposals?

Hello! Gurnee SD 56 is doing a bookmobile service. All 4 of our libraries have a bus that was transformed into a bookmobile because our schools are 100% remote at his time. The librarians ride the bus, we go out two days a week to different neighborhoods in the district, and we allow a couple of kids on the bus at a time. There is a separate schedule for each building. Kids in grades 3-8 have been trained to put books on hold, so many of them have books ready for them when they get on the bus. We have our laptops on the bus and check kids out right there. This system is not perfect, as we cannot get to every single neighborhood, but it has brought an immense amount of joy to our students and of course to us librarians who desperately just wanted books to get to our kids.
I am happy to discuss further if anyone is interested to know how we organized everything.

I am having the same issue with the holds feature.  It would be better if we could see the Grade/Classroom in the information.  This is something we should suggest to Follett. I say that and have found that they don't really take me up on my suggestions! haha

I created a google form for requests. I then added scripts to the spreadsheet it creates to have it send me an email with the request. I then cut and paste the request into another email to let the students know when the books will be ready. I also put printout of the request on the exterior of the bag and attach it to the exterior of the bag.

WARNING; This email originated from a non VVSD email address. DO NOT CLICK on links if the sender is unknown. NEVER provide your password to anyone making this request.

I print the hold notices.  I sort by grade and check the box that says Homeroom.

I put the hold notice in the book so the students name, grade and homeroom show. It makes it much easier for me to pull because all of the books the student requested are on one piece of paper.

Hi all,

Is anyone else out there managing pulling holds in Destiny for hundreds of kids who are in person as well as remote learners?  This is all new to me and I'm in up to my eyeballs.  I wish I could pull hold reports based on classroom but it doesn't seem possible.  I'm glad kids are using this new function - but I cannot figure out how to sort it out.  On my holds list I only have title, item # and student name - and have to go back into their record to figure out which teacher they have. I'm thinking of adding something to the name fields of remote learners so I can see them quickly on my reports (RL or something like that).

Anyone who has experience doing this - I would love some work flow pointers!

TIA!!

Emily

I am commenting on here simply so that I can keep getting the messages!  I am desperately trying to convince my district that we need to do checkout.

I placed a box for book returns in the vestibule of our main entrance. The outer doors are always unlocked. Teachers leave things here for students to pick up/drop off, as well the main office. I'm also placing recreational books for remote students there for them to pick up.

Hello,

These are all amazing ideas! Thank you for sharing!

Many have mentioned having a drop box for returns, are you using a bin inside the school entrance where parents must be buzzed in? I was looking into something outside that parents would have access to after hours but outdoor drop boxes are expensive.

Thank you!

Hi,

Is your district remote and doing a curbside or other book checkout/pickup plan? Our librarians are hoping to get books into kids' hands but our district wants a proposal from us.

Please reply if you are remote and doing a book checkout program. District 97 librarians would love to hear from you.

Thanks,
