Hi all,

I just wanted to point out some good news that was announced on Friday in the Illinois State E-News (see below):

The per-pupil rate for the School Library District Grant has been increased from $0.75 to $0.885 per student of schools with a qualified school library. The minimum award increased from $750 to $850.

A qualifying school library means you have a paid employee in your school library 15 hours per week or more. If you don't know what the School Library District Grant is, you can find more information on the ISL website<https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/grants/schoolpercapgrant.html>. You can even find out how much your district received last year<https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/library/grants/pdfs/fy21_sdlgp_awards.pdf>. Applications are now open for FY22.

If you have no idea what any of this means, but are curious about how this all works, send me an email. I'd love to talk more about these funds and how you can get your hands on them.

Dan

P.S. If you don't subscribe to the ISL E-News, I highly suggest doing so. You can find information about how to do so if you scroll to the very end of this email.

Increase in Per Capita Grants
The School District Library Grant provides supplementary support for the school district's library media program to enhance student learning and academics. Grant funds are typically used for the acquisition of library materials to support reading for academics and enjoyment, library subscriptions to electronic resources, or library-based technology to support student research. Public Act 102-0039<https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/fulltext.asp?Name=102-0039&GA=102> allowed for increased funding starting in FY 2021. The rate per pupil has been increased from $0.75 to $0.885 per student of schools with a qualified school library. The minimum award increased from $750 to $850.

The Public Library Per Capita and Equalization Aid Grant was established to assist public libraries to improve and increase library services within their service areas. Effective with the FY 2021 grants, the per capita rate increased from $1.25 to $1.475.

Literacy Spotlight
This month's Literacy Spotlight highlights Project READ at Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey. In August 2019, a woman was working two jobs to support her disabled husband and family members in Ethiopia. She worked as a hotel housekeeper during the day and at night stocked shelves in a department store. Her goal was to work only one job, so she sought employment with a local manufacturing company. When she was unable to pass the entry-level test, the company referred her to Project READ. She was matched with a tutor, and after five months of meeting twice weekly, she was able to show significant gains. With the help of a tutor, she passed the test and was hired for a full-time position.

Salute to veterans
This issue of E-News salutes Stephen Beasley, who served in Vietnam during the early 1970s. Beasley was stationed at Phu Bai Combat Base with the 101st Airborne Division. In the interview, he explained he was able "to do something positive in all the chaos" by teaching English to Vietnamese high school students and adults in the nearby city of Hue when he was off duty.
