[aisle] Name research

I used to teach a whole unit about researching names to my fifth graders.
My students loved it!

Step 1 -- Believe it or not, I started old school by having the kids use
baby name books. They LOVED those books because they are so much fun to
look through. That was step 1. (I bought baby name books cheap, cheap
cheap from Amazon, Half Price Books, etc. Bought ethnic baby name books!
See below.

Step 2 -- Search the Social Security Baby Name Database
<https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/>. I had them make comparisons over a
hundred year time frame, i.e., Was your name in the top 100 names in 1900?
2000? Is your name in the top 10 this year? Etc.

Step 3 -- Interview Your Parents. Ask them questions about how you got
your name. Why is it important? Does your name fit you? Etc. One kid
found out his parents named him something completely different at birth but
changed his name legally when he was three months old because "he wasn't a
Jacob."

The kids then took all their research and put together a presentation that
they gave to the class. They had a blast!!
The only issue I ran into was kids who had names that were unusual or from
another country could not find their names in the Social Security
database. I bought a lot of ethnic-related baby name books so that usually
worked.

Have fun with this!
