Dear collective mind,

Wow. Just Wow. I want to thank this group for the ideas that came back for our inaugural run of a faculty book club. It was a big success. I had 1/3 of my teachers participate. Well, that brings be back to our fountain of wisdom for the next book… Maybe He Just Likes You.

In January and February, members of my faculty will be meeting 3 times to discuss the book. Just like last time, we will meet as if it was a student group the first time, an adult group the second time, and with an expert the third time.

I need help with the third session. I am looking for an expert that could talk an hour about the effects of bullying/sexual harassment on the adolescent mind. Any suggestions? Groups? Individuals?

Thanks,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

Subject: Faculty Book Group Using Fighting Words

Good morning collective,

One of the things I’ve always wanted to do was get a faculty book club going that uses current YA novels. Well, I finally have funding to do such a thing! Whoot! Whoot! On top of that, we are offer my faculty professional development hours. Hence, in the fall, we will be starting our first faculty book club and it will debut with Kimberly Brubaker Bradley’s Fighting Words.

The plan right now is to do 3 session with this novel. Session one, discussing the book from the perspective of a student. Session two, discussing Fighting Words from the view of an educator. The third will be to bring in an outside expert to discuss child abuse with our book club.

Well, why I’m writing this is simple... I have found plenty of materials for the first and third sessions. What I am struggling with is finding an adult-centered discussion guild for it. Here’s what I am planning on using with the teachers for the youth perspective session. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UvYW1fkYuwnGAE8dv8J8vaQF_Lb9L3EG/view?usp=sharing I don’t want to reinvent the wheel for the faculty one. Has anyone create one that they would like to share? Or do you have questions about Fighting Words that adults could discuss?

Sincerely,

Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School
