[aisle] The Undefeated

I'm a little late to the party but here's my input.

I have done this book with 2nd grade and will do it with K and 1. We are
on quarters and I am seeing kids four days a week for a 1/2 hour via Zoom
(3 classes per day of second grade). I also am assigned to teach 2nd grade
SEL (Second Step) on Fridays.

I spent 2 days on The Undefeated and Let the Children March with 2nd
grade. We read both books the same day and talked about any things they
noticed or wanted to discuss. On day 2 we dug in and I read through some
of the back matter while projecting the accompanying images. We had a
really great conversation around empathy. The page with the broken
photographs made a big impression on them. We discussed why someone might
want to use a bomb (student question, student answered) and they thought
that maybe things were changing too fast for that person. I asked what
they could have done differently - they answered, "talk about it or discuss
things". We talked about the Civil Rights Marches and discussed what
might have happened if the police officers had had empathy. The kids
answered, "let them march, not spray them with hoses, not take them to
jail".

I was so proud of the discussion we had that week. I also got notes from
parents thanking me for having that discussion. As a side note, it was the
week of 1/6 and families were struggling with how to tackle some of the big
topics in the news that week.

I apologize for my rushing in writing this. I'm happy to talk to anyone in
more detail. Today has been a crazy day. I plan on doing both these
books with Kindergarten next week. One of my Zoom classes has 45 kids,
so ... a lot less discussion and I will probably focus on some of the
wonderful above suggestions. I'll see 1st grade in quarter 4. I guess
I'll cross that bridge in April. Karen
