I’m the one who used the term. As a librarian I use the term barcode to mean the label I put on my library items. It is usually rectangular in shape. An asset tag can be larger, square, really small, etc. I learned about the difference talking with my label vendor. Asset tags are usually much more durable to the point of even being metal and darn near impossible to remove. My asset tags have a red strip at the top and say Property of Rock Falls High School. I had used my library barcodes when I first began but they got wiped off, severely worn, and picked off. So I had a chat with the vendor to express my dissatisfaction. Big eye opener. Bottom line: asset tags for anything that isn’t library. Barcodes for library. My scanner reads both. Double check that. 😬

It only makes sense. Having an office lady count textbooks in teachers' rooms was hard and didn't happen more than once a decade. Also some teachers reported loss and others didn't care. The school library is the hub of the school and has software built to track associations of items to persons. I took this chore off the hands of the office personnel who were extremely grateful and that has been REALLY helpful in a number of ways. I use a different asset tag for all inventory (textbooks, chromebooks, hot spots, title one purchases, etc.). It is so easy for student services to quickly check with me when a student transfers or withdraws to check for any tech. They often think of tech items before they think about whether or not the student has library books. This service has built relationships with the office, tech staff, counselors, and teachers. I would offer the service. It is another layer of things to do but it pays dividends.

>> Alan's points are very WELL put....you will need help, you'll want the different asset tags. You should be compensated for it and regular time allotted. They need a whole different level of durability and I have put our school initials before the numbers. Easy to spot inventory items in the checkout list. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Do you have the time to do primary cataloging to add a title record for each type of item? Do you have paid hours to organize everything over the summer? Do you have paid hours to check equipment out to faculty?

I am the union rep for our "special" teachers. Basically, if a teacher is the plan period for another teacher, I am the union rep. I had to point out that the library directors get "extra" plan periods because we have extra duties. For example, I spent 3 days just adding portable amps and Bluetooth headsets to our inventory. I shared that with our union's other reps. I pointed out that our jobs are unique because we do stuff for other classrooms and not just ours. You need to talk to your union rep about this issue and is it in your job description to check out manuals and other things to your teachers?

On non-pandemic years, I have had a small army of NJHS and NHS volunteers in here doing everything from sorting our AV cords, cleaning remotes (How does a faculty member get a remote sticky?), covering paperbacks, repo-ing AV carts, putting kits of projector cables and SMARTboard pens together, coiling up the cords for surge protectors, et. al... I'm fortunate that my principal pays for a week of the pizza for the student volunteers. Bottom line is if they want it done, say yes and ask for compensation.
