What about *It Wasn't Me

by
Dana Allison Levy? It's a mystery, but not a murder mystery, and there's no
overt romance, though there is a character who develops a crush. It may be
a little too easy for higher readers, but it's pretty low-stakes and fun.
Plus, the author borrows heavily from *The Breakfast Club*, which she fully
owns up to, and also to Karen McManus' books.
