Try Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. Each chapter is really short but powerful and would not seem like a baby story.

Ooh, tough request. So many short-short stories read like poems in that they demand that readers pay close attention.

You may find some options on Common Lit. <https://www.commonlit.org/> I browsed by Genre- (Short Story) and then filtered it to a 6th grade audience and found this Gary Soto short story<https://www.commonlit.org/en/texts/seventh-grade> that they might like.

Hi, everyone,

I am looking for (a book of) short stories for students in our high school special needs classes. These students don't like stories that seem too baby, too elementary. They don't want to read picture books no matter the design or complexity.

If I read the stories aloud to them, the reading should last 5-10 minutes so I'm thinking 3-8 pages.

Any recommendations?

Thanks so much for your insights & ideas!
