I’ve always done a lesson and checkout in 30 minutes for each class. I’d like a 30 minute lesson per class.

We are a much smaller school; however, I teach a 30 minute lesson and then the teacher brings his/her class down for 15 minutes another time during the week (scheduled with my Assistant) for book checkout. This gives me the opportunity to do a full lesson plus they get another 15 minutes to look for a book another time. If I'm not teaching during that time, I go and help. The teacher stays since she has already had her 30 minute prep with me.
Kindergarten - we have 4-5 kids from both classrooms scheduled for a 15-minute time to come down as a small group for an informal library lesson and book checkout time. Gives us an opportunity to work more closely with the small group rather than having a full class come down. We work the time out with the classroom teacher. We pick up the same kids on the same day every week for this lesson. We've done that for 3 years now and we all love it.

My principal and I are brainstorming ideas for our library schedule in our K-5 elementary school (non-Covid times). Currently, each class visits the library for 30 minutes once per week. Since we have five sections of each grade, I see about 30 classes a week. I usually spend 10-15 minutes on a short lesson or read-aloud and then they have 15-20 minutes to choose books.

I want to know what you do (in non-Covid times)! Do you do a 30 minute lesson one week and then let them check out books every other week? Do you see classes for a longer/shorter amount of time each week? Are students able to come to the library during their free time to choose books? Do you do something completely different?

I’m open to any ideas as well as real-life experiences!

Thanks in advance!
