[aisle] Dr. Seuss Controversy

Hi everybody,
Librarian Katie Salo made and shared this (attached) infographic on Twitter
<https://twitter.com/storytimekatie/status/1367218117626109953?s=20> which
might be helpful.

I've noticed that people outside of libraryland benefit from reminders that
thousands of books go out of print every year, for a variety of reasons.
Countless books get weeded from our libraries every year, for a variety of
reasons. And that's before we start looking at all of the creators whose
books never get published or seen--ever.

Emphasizing that libraries use collection development/maintenance policies
and that those policies guide decisions about acquisitions and weeding has
been helpful for me in these conversations.

All that said, policies are never neutral. My colleagues and I are trying
to look at our collections policy and ask: is this policy aligning with
anti-oppression values, or is it supporting the status quo? Are there
places where we can be more intentional and direct about our commitment to
diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in our policies?

It's our job to create these policies, and then let them guide our
decisions. Our choices might not always be popular with majority culture,
but all this also reminds me of something Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas
recently shared: "Curation isn't cancellation."
