[aisle] Book help

Trying once again to find the book my grandson asked me to find the title of; he read it anywhere from 5-7 years ago. Who would know better than you wonderful people?    It is a book about a father and son traveling as part of a group on some type of spaceship. Each person on the ship is there because of their specific knowledge of a subject. One night the son is on duty with the man who studies lightning. This man wants to fly the ship closer to the lightning but the boy isn't sure. Eventually, the boy gets tired, the man tells him it's okay to go to sleep, he does, and the man flies the ship too close to the lightning and they are stranded on some plant. The boy is trying to help, but his dad is mad at him.    I'm sure there is more, but he doesn't remember it.    Any help would be appreciated.
