House Bill 234 the Media Literacy Bill has passed the House and is now
scheduled to be heard in the Senate Education Committee on Tuesday, May 18,
at 1:00 p.m. This bill has been endorsed by AISLE and ILA. The bill
requires every high school to include in their curriculum instruction on
media literacy beginning with the 2021-2022 school year.

It has been a goal of AISLE and other organizations to make sure that
students make good choices in the use of media in all its formats. Learning
how to find reliable sources and to understand media bias are important
tools not only for schoolwork but also as an active citizen of the 21st
 century.

The AISLE Board has voted to send a letter of support for this bill to the
Senate Education Committee. The bill must pass in committee to be voted on
in the Senate. If it passes, it then goes to Governor Pritzker for his
signature.

Here is your opportunity to be an advocate for this bill. You can be a
proponent by filing a witness slip for the bill before it is heard in
committee. The Illinois General Assembly has a website where you can send
this slip electronically to the committee.
