[aisle] Recommended school library budget

Well, since we don’t have a specific recommendation… Here’s the guidelines from my district to our building administrators.

“Library Supplies account is 4.5% of the school budget from the district. Library Books account is 6% of the school budget from the district. However, the school transfers funds from General School Supplies account to increase funds in both of these Library accounts.” My library receives about $800 above this guideline. I know that at least 1 library in the 20 schools in my district receives $0 from their building.

In addition to that, my library also receives Title I funds and SLG funds. eBooks are paid for and managed by the district, so I don’t need to pay for these. The deal I have with my administrators is as long as I bring in more from grants, they won’t cut my budget. Hence, I enjoy funding that is well above the district’s guideline and I’ve had the exact same number for the last 6 years. Now that being said, the funding on a per child basis from the building is still less than $3. Add in Title I and SLG, I am around $8.50 per child or how I like to say it almost half-a-new-book per child per year.

Side note, write grants. Last year was a down year for me. I only brought in $5500 from grants. My favorite this year was the $2000 I won to bring in comic books.

Hope this helps,
Alan, Librarian serving Brooks Middle School

ISLMA had a discussion years ago about this topic.... we didn't want to have a magic number because some schools are so much higher than others.... We would have never been able to come up with a figure. Especially across the state an number would not be easy..

I have not seen a recommended amount. I did this a dozen years or so ago and never found one. If one has come out since then I’d love to know.

A few tips from my similar journey, since so many people seem to be interested in this topic:

I would strongly suggest if you are going to use other school’s figures and numbers, you choose COMPARABLE schools.

Start with schools in your immediate area that are similar in size, demographics, etc. If you can point out that your numbers are lower compared to schools in your area that your superintendent is familiar with, you’re more likely to get your increase. (An AISLE chapter can be a great resource for this!)

It doesn’t help to compare a school in a very poor area, like mine, to a school in a very well-off area. Keep that in mind. In the same note, private schools and public schools sometimes aren’t comparable.

It CAN help to compare the elementary schools in your area to your high school, for example, to use the argument “They come from a school that spends $x/student and we only spend $y.”

If it helps at all, my book budget comes out to about $4.25 a student. So not even one book a year, per kid.

Good luck!

Subject: [aisle] Recommended school library budget

Hi all!
We are hoping to increase our library budget next year and our superintendent is asking if there is a recommended amount to spend per student. I can find averages spent but not recommended amounts. I checked ALA and AASL but haven’t seen specific amounts. Does anyone know of any or could you point me in the direction of some resources?
Thank you!
Megan
