[aisle] 3D Printer

We have a few – a Makerbot Mini, an older Ultimaker 2+ and a new Ultimaker S3, which has dual extraction. I’ve been pretty happy with all of them. The Makerbot is pretty small, so I use the Ultimakers more. The older one has been getting clogged a lot, which is a big pain. For curricular purposes, students have used them to print parts for mousetrap cars (for Physics), 20-sided anion/cation dice for Chemistry, and various prototypes for our Entrepreneurship classes. There are lots of ideas out there, and Makerbot has a free educator’s guide with ideas. Students can also print just for fun, and we usually do charge a materials fee for that ($0.05 per gram). I usually give them one print for free. Our most popular design program is Tinkercad<https://www.tinkercad.com/>, which is free.

If you have the budget money, I think it is worth it. Students really do learn a lot from it, and they often have to tweak their designs, so it’s good for developing those resiliency skills. We also have a few students who know way more than I do about 3D printing, so I’m always learning from them, too.

Feel free to email me directly for more information.

Hello! If your library has a 3D printer, could I ask a few questions?

What brand do you have? We are looking at Ender 3 Pros or V2s and then a more expensive Luxbot that has been recommended by another teacher.

What do your students use it for? Do enough use it that it's worth it.

Do you charge $ for students to use it? If so, how much? Do you base it off print time or just have a flat fee?

What software do you use? How much does it cost?

Thank you!!
