Hi Jessica! Happy to share my Classroom Book Displays. Just did one this
week for a 6th grade science teacher. She wanted a display of space
science technology, so I pulled books about Hubble telescope, space
stations, astronauts, living on the international space station, working at
NASA, etc. She looked over my selections then I checked all the books out
to her and provided her with a list so she'll know titles and how many.
Sometimes the teacher will ask me to do a few booktalks to introduce the
display, other teachers just want the display without the booktalks. Then
I set up all the books in a decorative manner on a spare book cart (or
sometimes the teacher has set aside a small table or spare desk...) If I
have small decorations that I can add to the cart or display, I add those
as well. I put a couple of small posters on the end panels "These books
are out of this world!" Then I rolled the whole thing to her classroom.
This particular teacher is not planning to let the students take the books
out of the room, but other teachers will email me a barcode number and
student name if a student wants to take a book home. The teacher and I set
a due date...she can keep the books in her room for as long as she requires
them. The only restriction I have is that I don't let teachers take a
collection of new fiction because I feel those belong in the library with
equal access for all. But in general, my teachers are asking for
collections that complement a unit of study that they are currently
teaching. The whole service has worked out really well and teachers really
like the option of "placing an order" and getting a great display
delivered. I've also started keeping lists of titles so that I don't have
to recreate the wheel if the teacher wants the same display again next year
(or the teacher next door wants the same display later in the year). And
that's basically it! 😊
