[aisle] Help Identifying a Book

Hello,
Can you please help me identify which book this student might be trying to find? Her description is below:

"So, the book had a beige cover and I read it in 5th grade as in assignment. All I remember is this family had a little boy and they had a slave named Ezra. There was a violent scene in the book of a horse get beheaded. I think Ezra dies in the end I think. Thank you!"
