Hello school librarians! There is a hearing in the U.S. Congress scheduled
for Thursday, April 7, at 9 a.m. Central time on the topic of Free
Speech/Book Bans and Academic Censorship
<https://oversight.house.gov/legislation/hearings/free-speech-under-attack-book-bans-and-academic-censorship>,
in the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Subcommittee of the House Committee
on Oversight and Reform. It is set to be live-streamed on YouTube
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOEhxXkXNRc> and via the Subcommittee's
website.

There are two Illinois representatives serving on the Subcommittee: Robin
Kelly (IL-02) and Danny K. Davis (IL-07). The Illinois Library Association
would like to prepare their offices with as much information on this topic
as I can. We have already shared the AISLE statement
<https://www.ila.org/content/documents/Aisle_Statement_on_Censorship.pdf> on
the topic and ALA's new Unite Against Book Bans
<https://uniteagainstbookbans.org/> with each of their offices.

Can any of you tell us if you have experienced an uptick in book and
materials challenges, and if so, which titles/content? It's a very tight
timeline, but if you have any information readily at hand that you can get
to ILA before, say, noon TOMORROW (Wednesday 4/6/2022) it would be very
helpful! Please report any information to Diane Foote, Executive Director,
ILA, at dfoote at ila.org.

THANK YOU in advance for any help you can provide, and for all you do every
day on behalf of Illinois students, fellow teachers, and families.
