GENOCIDE AWARENESS MONTH
EDUCATOR PROGRAMS & RESOURCES
April is designated as Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month each year, as it marks important anniversaries for multiple acts of genocide. Throughout the month, individuals and organizations join to commemorate and honor victims and survivors, educate about past and contemporary genocides, and advocate for prevention against future mass atrocities. Through our field trips, teaching trunks, and teacher professional development opportunities we offer a range of programming to help you teach about genocide and learn how to discuss current atrocities with your students.

During this four-day seminar, teachers will begin an investigation into case studies of the genocides against Native Americans, the Maya in Guatemala, the Rohingya, and the Uyghurs. The course will include multi-media presentations, guest speakers, and will draw interdisciplinary connections that align with Illinois and national standards. Educators will be equipped to return to their classrooms with a deeper understanding of the origins of genocide, risk factors, and the historical background of the specific genocides. Participants will leave with rich pedagogical resources that will enable them to investigate with their students the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and indifference, and the role of the individual in nurturing and protecting democratic values and human rights.

Session topics include: The Native American Genocide, The Guatemalan Genocide, Genocide against the Rohingya and Uyghurs.

Traveling & Virtual Teaching Trunks Available

Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the Holocaust and begin reflecting on the complexities of human rights violations and genocide. Resources will engage students in the exploration of genocides in Armenia, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur, as well as human rights abuses against Japanese-Americans during World War II and child soldier recruitment in countries such as Uganda and Sierra Leone.

Through this combination of history and the examination of human behavior, we provide educators and students with tools necessary to explore the precarious nature of human and civil rights, and delve into the dynamics and relationships that make up our diverse communities.

NEW LESSON PLANS FROM EDUCATORS' INSTITUTE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

The Educators' Institute for Human Rights (EIHR) has partnered with the VII Foundation, an organization dedicated to building peace and ending conflict through photojournalism. EIHR has written lessons based on VII Foundation's exhibit and website, Imagine: Reflections on Peace (www.reflectionsonpeace.org<https://ilhmec87820.lt.acemlnb.com/Prod/link-tracker?notrack=1&redirectUrl=aHR0cCUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy5yZWZsZWN0aW9uc29ucGVhY2Uub3JnJTJG&sig=DRthaJ29kSePSje7Xdn9ezkYsLoPqYnJjpQwD7EqKLBW&iat=1649857665&a=%7C%7C475914257%7C%7C&account=ilhmec87820%2Eactivehosted%2Ecom&email=NyCtAQPGW1ReuIEeXLUlXdgnoFC5IPPSO%2F6KEUQxb1I%3D&s=e40cade6098006951bf635f3a4fed020&i=1396A1528A10A31631>). The countries represented are Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Colombia, Lebanon, Northern Ireland, and Rwanda; each country has foundational lessons (timeline and photo activities, etc.) as well as two extension lessons.

EIHR would love help piloting these lessons. Teachers can choose a country and pilot the whole unit or select lessons, or can choose more than one country to teach. Please contact us at education at ilhmec.org<mailto:education at ilhmec.org> if you're interested in participating.
