[aisle] Reading to a Dog--Ideas for Family Night

To Jennifer Brown and others wondering about therapy dogs for reading:

For several years now we have been having therapy dogs come to the library
on a regular basis so kids can read to them. It's not the same as what you
are talking about, but it has been a great experience and my info may help
guide you. I have definitely seen kids who are too shy or not confident
enough to read aloud in class come and happily read to the dogs.

Kids come in groups of 2-4 with books preselected in the classroom and take
turns reading/petting. Each kid reads for maybe 3-4 minutes, so depending
on reading level that could be a whole book or just a few pages. We tell
the kids they can handle words they don't know however they choose - skip
them, ask for help, say another word, whatever - the dog won't mind. ;-)

Our dog owners have really cute trading cards that they give the kids -
those are a really big hit. We rotate through the classes so each kid gets
a turn every month or two so the dog can see how they are improving.

Hope this helps some!
