[aisle] Streaming movies legally

We went through this at my middle school. There are no streaming services – such as Prime, Netflix, etc. that license to schools, so there’s no way to stream legally from the mainstream services. Swank does offer streaming (Swank K-12 Streaming | Swank Motion Pictures<https://www.swank.com/k-12-streaming/>) but we found it did not cover the films the teachers wanted to stream so we decided to stick with DVDs. Our tech department didn’t want teachers streaming anyway, due to the drain on the broadband.

Hi Patti!

We have SWANK streaming here at LFHS. It's fine for some things (decent feature films) but not for others (not as much in the way of content-specific films). A few of our teachers are heavy users and others never use it. The ones who do appreciate the ability to assign films to students that they can view independently. From everything I've read, none of the mainstream streaming services authorize school. They can (and will) freeze your account if they detect that multiple users are trying to log in. They would be of limited use anyway since they limit the number of simultaneous viewers on one account.

I had a long talk with Jordan last year about streaming films and future ideas; feel free to contact me at my lfschools address and I'm happy to talk details with you! I'm out on mat leave right now, so I might have a bit of a delayed response.

Thanks for the replies about SWANK - keep 'em coming, if you can.

A follow up question: In looking at Amazon, it says I can use for "personal and non-commercial" use. Is this school friendly? In this case, we'd look at purchasing a digital movie from Amazon to stream, not use Amazon Prime videos.

Thanks,
Patti

Hi Patti and all,

I started subscribing to the SWANK K-12 streaming program when students were virtual and hybrid. I decided to continue the subscription this year. We get access to their catalog of titles for the middle school package and get a number of discretionary titles we can add during the year.
It's worked pretty well for us so far.

Happy to answer any questions you have.
Best,
Erin

Hi All,
Like many of you, we're running into the issue of teachers wanting to stream movies in class.
We have the Swank movie license, but that only covers DVDs. Has anyone subscribed to their streaming license? Are there enough movies to satisfy teachers?
What other legal routes have you gone for streaming videos in class?

Thanks for your input.
