Subject: Re: [aisle] Class Reading Alternative Book Policy

Hi Melissa,

I would ask for a statement from the parent.

What is their motivation and end game objective?

Then I woul dlayer that statement with the school curriculum guide and go from there.

Many times these are religious beliefs, sexual content, or other character formation issues.

Giving the parent the assignment first keeps you form having to play, "what about this?" back and forth.

This also helps you to create an ongoing list for future reference.

As a former English teacher, I understand it can be frustrating to have to differentiate and meet curricular goals.

You are a warrior public educator. Keep going.

Side note: Another opportunity is for the parent and child to read the assigned book together. This gives the child the educational perspective of his/her/they classmates and the parental perspective. The parent can co-educate....very powerful....and in the end the child come to their own conclusions.

Subject: [aisle] Class Reading Alternative Book Policy

[EXTERNAL]This email originated outside of DISTRICT 205. Do not click links, open attachments, or respond if it appears to be suspicious.
Good Morning.

There is a parent at our school that has objected to multiple large class read assignments. No Romeo and Juliet, no To Kill a Mockingbird, no Salt to the Sea, and no The Crucible. Up until The Crucible an alternative book was accepted on the first try. However, finding an alternative to The Crucible was a nightmare. It took over four books for an alternative to be acceptable, and even then the teacher isn't all that pleased because the book is a bit low in reading level. Currently, we do not have a set policy for dealing with this type of situation, but we are looking into having one because we know the parent is going to object to future class reading assignments. Does anyone have a set policy for dealing with this situation? Does anyone have a list of class reads and the alternative book offered?

Thank you for any help offered.

Melissa
