[aisle] DItch Dewey?

Our elementary schools are genrefied but use Dewey to organize the individual sections. Our high school and middle schools have genrefied fiction sections. I have a couple of pieces of concrete advice for anyone considering a project like this:

· Accessibility is key. Color coding is not accessible to everyone.

· Make your own labels. Your sections should be based on your collection and those your serve, not the labels available.

· You will redo and rethink every decision. That’s fine. Changing labels is easy. Updating the cataloging isn’t a big deal. Roll with it.

I know those may seem obvious, but I’ve talked to enough people at various points in genrefying or redoing nonfiction that I thought chiming in couldn’t hurt!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer!

Did this at the end of the school year. I used these resources the most…

I am in the middle of doing this right now! I also used Kelsey Bogan as part of my model. My biggest tip is to first decide why you want to ditch Dewey--your ultimate goal with recategorizing your collection. Mine was to better match curriculum and to make browsing for resources a little easier for my students (they don't seem to use the catalog much to search for books). If you would like to chat about my process and all that, I'd think it would be better to chat off the listserve. Hello all,

There are some great tips for this on Kelsey Bogan's blog Dontyoushushme including non-fiction printable and editable signage and a spreadsheet of her adapted dewey system. She shows how she adapted it once and then went back and looked at it again. I just redid my non-fiction based on her first post. It took forever to recatalog and relabel and I have a small collection (3500 items).

Hi Carol et Al,
I’m looking into this as well, including ideas for genrefied signage. If anyone has ideas on that as well, I’d appreciate it very much. Kind of thinking an emoji-like theme, even for NF. They’d be “create your own emoji” instead of current ones.

Thanks as well!

Hi all,
We have made the jump in our district to genrefied fiction and are now looking at Ditching Dewey for nonfiction. Wondering if anyone out there has done this and has some insight, thoughts, hints, etc about the process, problems, etc they've run into.
Thanks!
