[aisle] stories about soldiers

Dear library colleagues,

My rising second grader is looking for a story about a soldier. I was
surprised by this request, but she wants something with action:
something historical would be great. She has her own Nook that she reads
with her aunt in the afternoons, so her ideal is an older story that she
can download for free from Project Gutenberg. However, she is open to any
and all suggestions!

Ideas? I'm drawing a blank here.
