[aisle] Late Fees for Books

I did away with overdue fines once I realized I never got the money. It went into a “general fund” to be spent as district sees fit. If it doesn’t benefit the library in ANY way, and in many cases discourages a student from coming in, what is the point?

I also don’t get the money students pay the district for lost books. It again goes into some general fund and I never see it. I encourage students, when possible, to replace the book with a copy from Amazon or somewhere else. Often cheaper for them and I actually have the book again.

We used to charge 10 cents per day for overdue books, but we stopped that practice during Covid.
Once students were back in person, we decided to permanently do away with overdue fees. I have no regrets. :)

Our high school does charge 5 cents per school day for late books. I would really like to get rid of this, so I'm glad you brought up the topic.

Starting in January, a new law will be in place that prohibits us from charging students who are on free/reduced lunch for anything, including lost and damaged books, Chromebooks, etc.

How many of you charge late fees for library books? My new district does at the high school level and I'd like to do away with this. I know my admin will ask what other districts do.

If you do charge late fees, what do you feel are the advantages?

Thanks!
Anita
