[aisle] Late Fees for Books

We were told something similar – that the law has changed that we can no longer withhold diplomas for students who owe fines/fees. You can ASK for them to pay their fees but in the end, if someone chooses NOT to pay there’s no recourse the district has. I was told district is to submit a form to the state and IL will reimburse them for unpaid fees. I have not seen this law/update myself.

Karrie - Can you share a link or more info about this new law?

I don't charge for late fee, only for lost or damaged books.

Starting in January, a new law will be in place that prohibits us from charging students who are on free/reduced lunch for anything, including lost and damaged books, Chromebooks, etc.

How many of you charge late fees for library books? My new district does at the high school level and I'd like to do away with this. I know my admin will ask what other districts do.

If you do charge late fees, what do you feel are the advantages?

Thanks!
Anita
