Hello Hive mind,

I need help finding a replacement title for a student whose Mennonite
culture and the next unit of study in her English class is on the Harlem
Renaissance. All of the black authors and titles selected by the teacher
have the 'N' word and other assorted swear words. The class just finished
"The Great Gatsby" and they are watching the movie. The student said it
made her feel uncomfortable so she is sitting in the library for the
duration of the movie. The teacher is pretty sure she will not want to
read any of the titles she has selected for the Harlem Renaissance unit.
Any ideas? The titles the teacher has selected are: Uncle Tom's Children,
Native Son, Black Boy, The Ways of White Folks, and Their Eyes were
Watching God. One of the major purposes of the unit is to experience via
literature the feelings of the persons of color--so discomfort is part of
the project. I thought perhaps middle school level fiction?

Criteria: Black author, 1920-30s time frame, addresses racism/inequities
in society

Thank you so much!
