I wanted to share this Right to Literacy! virtual learning opportunity with librarians across the state.

> The right to read has been in the news quite a bit during the recent Banned Books week.  Our fall forum will look at multiple facets of literacy, as well as delve into the threats to limit our access to it. From the increased challenges to books (see the recent PEN report attached) to the decline of school libraries in Chicago and in low-income communities nationally (see the attached piece from the Sun-Times), the right to read is being constricted.  How will this impact students, educators, parents and all citizens? We think these are critical questions, especially in a time of disinformation, and increased polarization in our society!

> We are honored that Tracie Hall; the Executive Director of the American Library Association will be our keynote speaker.  
> She will discuss the importance of opening up knowledge in a democratic society.  Looking at both historical and current threats to suppress literacy (the attempts to shut down voices, ideas and books), Ms. Hall will offer suggestions for how educators and concerned citizens can promote critical literacy in classrooms and beyond.

> Responding to Ms. Hall is Nora Wiltse; the librarian at King College Prep in Chicago.  Ms. Wiltse will look at equity issues and access to literacy, and also offer educators practical suggestions for teacher/librarian collaborations.
