If we reach out to the media, the real issue is how poorly funded school libraries are. This is just a symptom of a larger issue. Seriously, show me another industry that an employee needs to do fundraisers so often.

I thought about that! What Scholastic is doing isn't illegal, it is simply unethical. I may reach out to the ABC 7 I-Team to see if they think this is story-worthy. I think it is!

I also went bananas when my rep told me that they were now charging a surcharge…I asked if they thought I was getting a raise for gas to drive to and from school. I told her to take my spring fair off the calendar until scholastic begins to appreciate their “minions” who literally make all their money for them. The result is they credited my account for the amount of the surcharge….

Our problem is with the unjust practice of a BILLION dollar company essentially charging schools to run your fairs. Scholastic is NOT a mom & pop shop struggling with inflation. The fuel charge is about company bigwigs making more cash. I find it greedy and immoral for business owners to nickel and dime schools and children, especially when the company has had record-breaking earnings the previous year. Scholastic is not in financial trouble, as the quotes below prove.

I know I am not the only one canceling book fairs due to this cash grab. Librarians across multiple Facebook groups are livid, and many small-town and low-income school librarians are feeling this surcharge hit their book budgets.
