I totally agree with Marybeth on Anything but Typical by Nora Raliegh Baskin. However you might also consider Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool.  Because Vanderpool's story is set right after WWII, she doesn't use the term "autism."  The character Early is considered odd, but rather than ostracizing him, Jack is interested in him and drawn to him.
