[aisle] favorite databases

Our district middle schools subscribe to FactCite, Gale Biography, Gale in
Context (Middle School), CultureGrams, and Britannica School.

I find that FactCite is my most student-used database. The readability
level and layout are great for middle school. Even our lower level readers
feel successful with their research! The white space, font size, and
section headings help to make note-taking less intimidating. The articles
are written for the database, so you may only get two or three main article
hits on a topic, but for many middle grade kids, that's actually helpful in
focusing their process.

Gale curates a wide array of sources, so if you're looking for a large
number of hits from a variety of journals, newspapers, reference books, or
audio files, they're a good one!

Both of them integrate with NoodleTools if you use that for research
organization.

We do get the ImageQuest add-on for Britannica, which is helpful if you're
working with students on identifying permissions for image usage. I also
like that Britannica has 3 reading level options.

If I was told I could only have one database, I would go with FactCite.
They may not cover every possible topic, but I have found them to be the
most widely useful for middle schoolers!
