Note

Short Term

Less Than a Week

I’m putting this on here as masking tape comes in many colors. This one is
just terrible for mounting anything. It has a purpose, just not one
involving hanging something for any length of time

Medium Term

Less than Two Months

You can probably find blue tape cheaper, but I prefer the brand name, as it
is less likely to discolor the surface if left on too long. See, the time
limits are less about how long they’ll hold something before they fall, and
more about how long the adhesive remains “unreactive”.

Long Term

Less Than Half a Year

LOVE THIS STUFF! Strong, long lasting (remains unreactive the longest I’ve
seen a tape be), and if removed carefully will not take the paint with it.
A lot like Command adhesive in that regard.

Very Long Term

Again, there’s a lot of putty out there, but this stuff is the real deal.
I have signs I’ve put up at the start of the year, and I’m monitoring them
for staining (my building engineer hates the stuff, but I think that’s
because people use the cheap stuff) I have noticed a degree of temperature
sensitivity, esp. when the poster is in direct sunlight. The putty will
ooze a little and need to be repositioned from time to time.

I’ve had some weird experiences with this stuff, but that might be because
I use it a lot, and everyone makes a dud batch from time to time. In one
instance, the adhesive pulled off not only the paint but some of the wall
behind it, and I was being very careful. In another instance, it was as if
the adhesive had dried up right out of the package. When I reached out to
3M, they asked me to send samples, which I did.
