<div dir="ltr"><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:comic sans ms,sans-serif">The moving of shelves to the exterior walls (a current trend) will raise the noise level, as there isn't anything to absorb sound/interrupt the sound waves. Our library is much noisier than it was before we got rid of our stacks. We also have sound absorbing tiles suspended from the ceiling, and while they are colorful and look cool, they don't absorb much noise because it's a very high ceiling.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:comic sans ms,sans-serif"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:comic sans ms,sans-serif">Also a word of advice from my experience:</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:comic sans ms,sans-serif">1. Don't assume the estimate of how much shelving you need reflects how you shelve your books now. Initially, our architects estimated shelf space based on each shelf being 90% full.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:comic sans ms,sans-serif">2. Don't assume that they plan on giving you shelves that are 13"-14" apart to accommodate 12" books. We have hundreds of books on their sides because the shelves are too close together.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:comic sans ms,sans-serif">3. I always had the bottom shelves empty; now I have to use them. If I had to do over, I would have asked for bottom shelves that were slanted at a 35 degree angle so that it would be easier to read the spines. <p class="MsoNormal">I am looking at replacing the original shelving in my middle school library. The proposed design includes metal shelving on the perimeter of the room. Does anyone have experience with both wood and metal shelving, and can speak to the
difference in noise level? My students visit the library as a whole class, so we often have 25 students at a time browsing for books. Has anyone switched from wood to metal shelving and noticed a considerable difference in noise?<u></u><u></u></p>
