<div dir="ltr">I agree with Jeanne. I did my high school 2 years ago and my elementary last year. It has been a big success in both buildings. I only did fiction. Non-fiction is still strictly Dewey. (And I still teach Dewey so that students know how to navigate by themselves). <div><br></div><div>Students can browse so much faster and are happy to find what they want. At first I was worried about kids getting stuck in a rut, but lately I've decided that I don't care that one little girl is trying to read the entire Mystery section before moving on. She is reading and thrilled with her accomplishment. I will continue to offer her other choices and someday she will probably diversify. But even if she doesn't, I'm good with that. It's leisure reading, so she can choose what she likes. As an adult, that's what I do when I go to a library.</div><div><br></div><div>If I have books that fit in more than one genre, I booktalk them and then ask the students where they think the book should go. This has led to some great conversations! Kids can also "challenge" any book genre choice and I've occasionally moved books based on their challenges. Again, great conversations!<br></div><div><br></div><div>One thing I'd do differently: I used color-tinted spine label protectors at the HS, and tiny colored dots at the elementary. I much prefer the tiny dots. They leave the spine label clear and easier to read.
