<div dir="ltr">We do our own version of the Battle as well. I do it all during library class. I am in a 4th and 5th grade building. The teachers put the students in groups of 5-6 students. During library over 3 weeks I do battles and the winners then compete at a grade level battle. I do not use Bluestem books. I have 20 books and introduce them before spring break - the battles begin in May. I have an assortment of levels, topics, lengths and a few nonfiction ones. <br class="gmail-Apple-interchange-newline"><div>To keep the momentum going, I encourage teachers to read at least 1 out loud and I do a bingo type hunt where the students have to find things like a book with a boy main character, a book with captions, a book that takes place at a school etc. I also ask students at the beginning of each library class to give a short book talk if they have finished a book. I offer lunch meetings with cookies (that always works) to chat about 2 or 3 of the books. They can only come if they have read the specific books I have chosen to discuss. </div><div>A huge part is the selling of it - if you are excited, the kids will be. Teacher buy in also helps. The winning team gets their names engraved on a plaque that hangs in the library.
