Several years ago we only had the Monarch grades K-3, the Caudill for 4-8, and the Lincoln Award for High School.
<div>The Bluestem Award was created for the very reason you’re pointing to, the need to give something more to those in between of 3-5 that would be engaging, not too heavy or dark, and at that reading ability. </div>
<div>The Bluestem Award, unlike the others, can go back to older classics too as it doesn’t have the strict current publishing guidelines of the other awards. </div>
<div>I used to use the Caudill for my 4th and 5th graders but exclusively use the Bluestem Awsrd list. We also as a district do a school and then district Bluestem Battle of the Books every year. Once completed my third graders are let loose to check out
the books and they snatch them up! </div>
<div>I’ve been a reader and currently am finishing my final year as the publicity co-chair for the Bluestem Award, and this was after serving on the Monarch Award for 6 years. I can’t say enough good things about our state award lists. Knowing the huge commitment
of time that goes into it, the careful consideration of all of the books, we are really fortunate to have all 4 lists to utilize with our students. </div>

<div dir="ltr">Rather than hijacking yesterday's thread, I thought I'd start my own to ask about the Illinois book awards and your own school book awards. From what I can tell, we have:

<div>I've always been middle school (6-8), so my experience comes from the Caudill list. I enjoy the titles on the list, but what I recommend to my sixth graders is often very different from what I recommend to my eighth graders. The number of books that
are classified as grades 4-8 is slim. There seems to be something dark and twisty that happens between these grades!</div>
