I can not log in with my current username and password because it has been deactivated which I understand they do every March 15th. I have not been able to find a paper form to fill out and mail and would prefer not to create a new username. Would like to get this taken care of so that I can apply for the LBSS grant.

I was nervous about the relationship in the story. In our elementary library we don’t have very many books that deal with romantic storylines, but I keep reminding myself that it is also about divorce and finding your voice. I also had a serious conversation with myself that if the storyline involved the same topics, but her having a crush on a boy, I wouldn’t have an issue with it. I think that sealed it for me. It will be on my shelves next year.

I think a story about coming out at age 13 should be for ages 11 and up (younger if they express an interest in LGBT stories/coming out stories). I realize Caudill is grades 4-8, but like you mentioned, Stephanie, some things that an 8th grader is going to read is going to be different than a 4th.

I encourage students and parents to look at the original list printed by the committee that has grade recommendations for the titles. Drum Roll, Please is recommended for grades 5-8. Drum Roll, Please has been a very important read to some of my middle school girls. Let’s not prevent such books from being on the list because of Santa Claus. Maybe kids in 3-5 should consider reading Bluestems instead. I am our middle school librarian and read all of the Caudills each spring and make recommendations to the elementary purchaser on titles that are more elementary versus those that are more solidly middle school.
