<div dir="ltr">If you read <a href="https://tinyurl.com/read-aloud-online">this paper</a> (or listen to the <a href="https://youtu.be/Og0DgELl3_4">YouTube recording</a>), you'll learn from a panel of experts that legally you don't need author or publisher permission in order to make a recording. It is, of course, BEST PRACTICE to look for author or professional recordings where they exist. However, if you want to record a book for your students for an educational reason, you can. However, it would also be BEST PRACTICE to put that recording behind a password-protected wall (like on an LMS, Google Classroom, a private YouTube channel, or a private Facebook page) and not out on the open internet. And when I make a recording, I always make sure that I've acknowledged the author, illustrator, and publisher. I also remove my recordings as soon as the lessons that they were intended to accompany are completed. I strongly believe that authors, illustrators, and <span class="gmail-il">copyright</span> holders should profit from their work. In these unprecedented circumstances, however, I feel like we librarians (and teachers) who are now teaching exclusively online are "advocate[ing] balance between the interests of information users and rights holders" (ALA 2008) as best we can in this situation, and that we are upholding our standard to "advocate for equitable access to and the ethical use of resources in a variety of formats” (AASL 2019, 5). <div><br></div><div>Educating our students is going to be quite challenging this year.
