We had already begun the first stages when we were shut down:</div><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false" style=""><ul dir="ltr" data-setdir="false" style=""><li style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;">Kids get to form their own teams of 4-5, pick a captain and team name</li><li style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;">We had created a list of 20 books, 16 were from the 2020 Bluestem list and 4 others were substitutes for some of the nonfiction that were difficult to create questions for that did not give away the title.</li><li style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;">Kids read the books on their own. We helped by stocking the libraries with as many as we could, purchasing audio and eBooks and the public library also had a set</li><li style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;">I had 9 teams and the other school had 7.</li><li style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;">We had 50 questions that all began "In which book"</li><li style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;">Teams had to answer with the title and then extra points for the author's name</li><li style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;">Since we were so new to the Google Meet we decided to challenge one team at a time. </li><ul style="font-family: times new roman, new york, times, serif; font-size: 16px;"><li>We gave them all 50 questions. </li><li>Team members had 30 seconds to talk to each other and decide on an answer</li><li>Only the captain could give the final answer</li></ul><li style="">When all teams had participated, we totaled each team score and came up with 1st-4th place winners for each grade.</li><li style="">We created a reveal video and emailed it to all members</li><li style="">We had trophies for 1st and 2nd place and medals for 3rd and 4th. Everyone else got participation ribbons</li></ul><div dir="ltr" data-setdir="false">We learned a lot from our first attempt and I think that if they decide to do it this year, it will go smoother and they might be able to find a way for teams to go head to head. <p class="ydp3ea773d8yiv0135653244MsoNormal">I am wondering if anyone is planning on organizing a virtual Battle of the Books competition this year? I have never done a regular Battle of the Books competition but I am assuming it would not be difficult to hold competitions via Zoom
or other video chat platform. I am planning on running one for our 3rd-5<sup>th</sup> grade students and our 6<sup>th</sup>-8<sup>th</sup> grade students using the short 10 book list.
