<div dir="ltr"><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large">I'm in a K-5 building, and we are back in the building. We also have a significant number of kids in remote learning. The specials (library, music, art, STEM, and P.E.) are teaching both in-person and remote. Our in-person classes are 25 minutes. Remote classes are 30 minutes. It's not enough time. We are on carts and our schedules require us to traverse the building from one end to the other each class period. It's hard but doable. Kids are not allowed in the library for classes (but apparently they are going to have a lunch period in here).</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large">My philosophy is that I show up everyday and we're all doing the best we can to keep the kids reading and learning.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large">I've been recording my remote lessons and posting them on Google Classroom or SeeSaw the same day I am teaching them in the classroom. I have not done a book check-out for the kids because my assistant is pulled to do lunch/recess/subbing duties. We can't keep up with circulation because, as you all know, it's labor intensive.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large">Last week -- our first week in -- I taught the kids how to log in to Destiny, and showed them how to check out ebooks and audiobooks. I also added databases to my account so they can do research using the databases simply by using Destiny Discover. Today I'm teaching my students how to use Axis360, which will give them hundreds of ebooks and audiobooks. Until I'm able to pull books to circulate, quarantine and disinfect returned books, then shelve books, I'm sticking with the ebook option.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:trebuchet ms,sans-serif;font-size:large">If you don't have an option for ebooks, check out Axis360. It's very affordable (about $200). Ask your public library if they will partner with you. That's what we are doing. I am advocating that my time for K-2 be decreased to 20 mins as that is about as long as their attention span can take and then I will have more time to get back to the library with their "library orders" and fill those orders and deliver them later in the day. My principal is trying to figure out how I could do just 20 instead of 40 min as my time with the class gives the teacher their lunch or a planning period. I am wondering if any of you are in a similar spot and how you are tackling this.
