The smell (often like cat urine, sometimes more like acetone) comes from ammonia-like odors produced by smoking and/or making meth (although the latter is far stronger & more concentrated). As the books in the original post showed absolutely no signs of moisture
damage the way peed-on books do & the child insisted they had no cat at home & had not been around a cat recently, several commenters urged OP to officially report the situation & their concerns.<br>

<div dir="ltr">Sometimes it helps just to prop the book open to air out. I have also placed books in plastic storage bags with some baking soda to help remove smells. Thankfully the smell you mentioned is not one I have had to deal with yet. Good luck!</div>
