I have worked on the committee with a dedicated amazing group of librarians from around the state. One of our objectives was to make it clear the instructional role librarians play in a school. I believe these standards are very important and very timely, so come to the presentation and look for more information on these revisions. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:georgia,serif;font-size:small;color:#0000ff"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:georgia,serif;font-size:small;color:#0000ff">In my district, Evanston 65, we have been working on library curriculum over the past two years. As part of our mission/vision we have broken down what our role and allocation of time in the categories of Instructional; Resource Management; Collaboration; & Readers Advisory/Checkout. With the guidance of the new standard revisions we have written student learning targets. It's some powerful stuff, plus I was just writing a sample SLO and realized all of the info is in our Unit plans. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:georgia,serif;font-size:small;color:#0000ff"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:georgia,serif;font-size:small;color:#0000ff">Overall we have a supportive administration. This being said, I was just talking to a building admin and asked what their priorities for the library program were, they didn't know. So our next step is to make sure we communicate with our admins to make sure they are aware of the impact on student learning that librarians have via curriculum design and state standards. I think having a clear mission, vision, state learning standards and defined curriculum is vital.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:georgia,serif;font-size:small;color:#0000ff"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-family:georgia,serif;font-size:small;color:#0000ff">I hope everyone has a chance to find out more about the standards this fall. teachers/reading specialists and school librarians. For our upcoming column, we’re focused (yet again) on the loss of school librarians and libraries in our state. In researching the number of funded librarian/media specialist positions for this school year,
I’ve hit a wall in finding this out. I realize learning this for private schools probably isn’t possible but I thought I could for public schools—yet I’m stymied in locating a database or other entity that could give me a sense of where we stand.
